Welcome to AccelPro Employment Law, where we provide expert interviews and coaching to accelerate your professional development. This week we are thrilled to introduce AccelPro Collections, where interviews are grouped based on common topics and themes.
This will be our last email of the year, so that we can take time to relax, reflect and prepare for an exciting 2024. We hope you have the chance to do the same.
In 2023, we’ve delivered insights each week and hosted peer-to-peer coaching sessions on the career topics you say matter most. Next year, you’ll continue to hear (and read) interviews with experts, and there will be more virtual events where you can share your perspective and seek advice from fellow AccelPro members.

I. On Workplace Discrimination - Harassment and Proper Training
With Andrew Adams, Practice Leader at DarrowEverett
This episode features a conversation about workplace harassment and training with Andrew Adams, the Practice Leader in DarrowEverett’s Labor and Employment Practice Group. Adams regularly advises clients ranging from small businesses to large multinational corporations regarding compliance with state and federal regulations and human resources matters, including personnel policies, day-to-day employment issues and internal investigations.
He frequently trains companies on best practices to spot harassment, how employers can avoid it, and how supervisors are the first line of defense against it. This episode dives into Andrew’s time training to become a Navy SEAL and his time crafting employment policies with the sheriff’s department, both of which have greatly influenced his legal career.

II. On Worker Classification, Apps and the Future of Work
With Samantha Prince, Assistant Professor of Law at Penn State Dickinson Law
This episode explores worker classification, a world-wide issue that goes far beyond Uber, freelance work and other aspects of the gig economy.
Explaining all the nuances of this complicated issue is Samantha Prince, an Assistant Professor of Law at Penn State Dickinson Law. She says “uncertainty and volume of lawsuits” related to this issue is not sustainable, and that it’s not just a financial or book-keeping issue. It’s a health issue.”
People who work without benefits such as retirement plans, paid time off or health insurance face stress-related health issues. But there’s no legal reason for it to be that way. Employers can provide benefits even to contract workers. “Some people do conflate receiving benefits with the current culture of traditional employment, which means ‘giving up your freedom,’” she says. “But there’s no rule that says that you have to give up control of your hours or how you work just because you’re receiving benefits.”

III. On Labor Negotiations Viewed from Both Sides
With Stephanie Sloggett-O’Dell, former union member, union attorney and HR executive
This episode features Stephanie Sloggett-O’Dell, whose background in labor negotiations uniquely qualifies her for this conversation.
She’s been a member of a union, an attorney for a union and a corporate vice president negotiating contracts on the management side. In other words, she’s seen every side of contract negotiations and lived to tell about it.
And what she tells are great stories about how (and how not to) conduct effective contract negotiations. The key, she says, is maintaining open lines of communication. You don’t have to like the person on the other side, but you do have to listen to them and respect them if you want to get a deal done.
